This was my first full scale piece of furniture from the first year of Furniture and project design. The Brief for this project was to design and make a seat made primarily from steel tube, rod and sheet. The seat also had to be lightweight and able to take a persons weight so clever structures had to used. The design had to fit in with a certain place such as a restaurant, park or other public location. The final full scale outcome had to be finished to a high standard. My design was for the market building/ shopping space being built in Sheffield. As the market space had not been constructed and work on it only just begun I based my design around the concept artwork for the new market. I decided to take inspiration from nature and created a design that resembled the micro structure of bones. I chose this as bones are strong and lightweight due to these micro structures. The final prototype was made from laser cut steel sheet to create the web and square section tube for the frame. The components were MIG welded together and then sandblasted to give it an even finish. I decided to paint the bench a warm white to match the designs original inspiration. The project went well and I was very pleased with the result as it closely resembled the CAD drawings and renders.
