These tables were designed for a module called Collaborative Practice. In the module we had to exchange design briefs and essentially design furniture for each other. This was to teach us how to design for someone else and not just for ourselves. We were required to have meetings with our 'clients' on a regular basis on collaborate on each others designs. My Brief was to design a contemporary side table for a living room with contrasting bright and light colours. My inspiration for these tables came from the flat topped acacia tree that is typically found in Africa. The tables are made from bent tubular steel that is brazed together and painted MDF tops that are fitted to the legs with wood screws. The manufacture was mostly difficult because of the bent parts and was hard to achieve on manual equipment. However this would not be hard to replicate using computer controlled machinery and could easily be manufactured with better accuracy and consistency. The manufactured versions would also come in a range of 'season' colour sets that represent Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. There is also the opportunity to manufacture them using solid or veneered wood for the tops to give them a more natural feel. |
